The company said it was consulting staff and unions on the possible job cuts at the site at Wakefield 41 Industrial Estate.

The announcement was made after Morrisons reported a 7.1 per cent slump in sales during the past three months.

But Morrisons said changes to improve efficiency at the site, which employs 1,700 people, were not linked to the sales figures.

A spokesman said: “We are consulting with colleagues and unions to reduce the risk of any compulsory redundancies, including redeployment around our business.

“We will be supporting all colleagues affected by the proposed changes.”

A member of staff who spoke anonymously said staff were told they faced cuts to their hours and changes to shifts in an announcement made at noon yesterday.

They said: “They said there is potential for wage reductions and I’m looking at a reduction of £300 a month.”
