The covernment launched the Business Grant Scheme in late March and Wakefield Council has so far distributed £65.7m to 5,640 businesses across the district representing 92 per cent of eligible businesses.

Coun Darren Byford, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and Regeneration, said: “These grants have been vital to our local businesses, helping to ensure the survival of many shops, cafes, hotels, restaurants and many other businesses. We’re delighted that we were able to secure such a phenomenal amount of funding, which has been very welcome during this challenging time, to support 92 per cent of eligible businesses.

“Although the vast majority of those eligible have now claimed grants, there is still time for others to come forward to receive the grant payment.

“We are extremely proud of our local economy, and even though this scheme is coming to a close, we will continue to do everything we can to support our businesses as we look to recover, rebuild and come back stronger from the pandemic.”
