Wakefield Market demolition plan - online questionnaire launched

An online questionnaire has been launched by Wakefield Council on controversial plans to close the city’s market hall and turn it into a cinema.

The council is considering a proposal by Sovereign Land, one of the owners of the Wakefield’s Trinity Walk Shopping Centre, to redevelop the market into a multi-screen cinema with restaurants and cafe units.

The outdoor market could be moved to the Cathedral precinct and indoor traders are being encouraged to take up empty shop units elsewhere in the city centre.

Denise Jeffery, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and economic growth, said: “We want to provide the best solution for both businesses and residents, but cannot do this without people’s views.

“The feedback received during this consultation will be presented as part of a wider report to cabinet to enable them to make an informed decision on the future of the market.

“I encourage all residents to have their say and fill in a questionnaire.”

Wakefield Council said the consultation would run from March 1-April 30.
