Thousands are expected to receive their GCSE results this Thursday despite the chaos over last week's A level results after this year's exams were cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Former Tory Education Secretary Lord Baker of Dorking, the architect of GCSEs, urged ministers to delay GCSE results day until the problems with A-levels have been resolved.

Speaking today, Conservative MP Stephen Hammond suggested that delaying GCSE results day "probably is the right thing to do".

"I am increasingly thinking that Lord Baker is probably correct," he told Sky News.

Ministers have been told to delay publishing the results after Ofqual's grading algorithm led to nearly two in five of teachers' estimates for A-level pupils in England being adjusted down last week.

But Downing Street has insisted there would be no delay to the announcement of GCSE results despite the confusion over A-levels.
