The boys from Queen Elizabeth Grammar School did a variety of fundraising activities including a non-uniform day, a sponsored dog walk, several ‘pup cake’ and doughnut sales and a sponsored 10km run.

Classics and English Teacher Steve Wood said: “The school is proud to be supporting Guide Dogs by sponsoring a puppy and the boys were delighted to hear about Chester and thrilled to receive the photograph and copy of his birth certificate.”

Guide Dogs train over 800 dogs for blind or partially sighted owners each year but the charity relies entirely on public donations for this service. Each pup’s first year of training costs around £5,000.

The charity’s ‘Name a Puppy’ scheme invites groups, companies and individuals to make an incredible gift or to fundraise to support a pup through their first training stage.

The £5,000 scheme doesn’t just give the opportunity to name a pup, sponsors also get to hear about their adventures as a guide dog puppy and meet the pup too.

Charlotte Walton, community fundraiser for Guide Dogs in Leeds, explained “The positive impact and freedom that a guide dog can bring to a visually impaired person cannot be overstated, and we are so pleased that the boys chose to support Guide Dogs. A name is the first gift that a puppy receives and by raising enough money to name their own puppy they have set Chester on a journey to becoming a lifeline to a person with sight loss. Later on when Chester is about four-months-old he will be visiting the school. I am sure that the boys will look forward to that and to hearing about his progress as he trains to become a guide dog.”
