Brian Coughlan, Oxbridge programme coordinator said they were delighted at the success of the students who have received offers from Cambridge and Oxford Universities.

“These places are highly oversubscribed and increasingly competitive,” said Brian.

“Our talented pupils have faced a tough selection process consisting of pre-tests, as well as intensive scrutiny of their academic achievements and very rigorous interviews. We wish them every success for the future.”

Karla Ashman, who studied biology, chemistry and physical education at New College, received an offer to study at Magdalen College, Oxford.

“My time at New College was tough but also very rewarding,” said Karla.

“You get out what you put in! Upon enrolling for college, I was approached on joining the Oxbridge group to prepare for applications. I had never previously considered applying for an Oxbridge university, but very quickly my mind was opened to the opportunities.

“Throughout year 12, we met monthly to engage in academic conversations (arranged by the Oxbridge co-ordinator), helping to build confidence.

“Over the summer holidays and the start of year 13, I had written many drafts of a personal statement, containing details of super-curricular activities I had completed, to send in October. Preparing for interviews was probably the most vital part.”

Karla added: “A small group of us applying for biology at Oxbridge was organised to ask us questions similar to ones we would be asked in an interview and given lots of guidance on how to answer them.

“By the time of my interviews in December I had practiced so much that answering difficult questions became second nature.

“Unsure on my performance in the interviews I was awaiting results in January, I was so pleased to find out I had been given an offer!"

“This is fantastic news,” said Vicky Marks, Principal.

“This is an amazing achievement for the students, and pays testimony to the support they have received from teachers and progress tutors at New College Pontefract.

“It is extremely rewarding to see the students pass through our Oxbridge programme and then go on to receive the offers from Oxford and Cambridge.”
