Since the first case of Covid-19 was confirmed in Wakefield on March 11, 2020, life in the district has changed in many ways. More than 23,700 people have since tested positive for the virus. While phrases such as "social distancing" and "self-isolation" might roll naturally of the tongue today, it can be easy to forget how much life has changed in the last 12 months. These are a few of the defining moments of the first few weeks of Covid-19 in Wakefield, Pontefract and Castleford.
9. Artistic streak
Pontefract artist Rachel List took things a step further, as she paid tribute with a series of stunning portraits dedicated to the district's NHS heroes. Her artwork was celebrated around the world.
10. Saying thank you
Big brands and names also paid thank you to NHS staff. Dominos and McDonald's were among the first to offer discounts and free food to those on the frontline of the Covid-19 fight.
11. Empty streets
As thousands of Wakefield residents began adapting to life at home, empty streets became the norm. With non-essential shops, restaurants and schools closed, the district's city and town centres were emptied of people.
