Asda admits review into concerns of overcrowded store

Asda has admitted it will be reviewing its safety restrictions over customer numbers after photos emerged of its Durkar store packed with shoppers.

The supermarket giant had initially defended its position and said it already had "extensive measures in place" when approached over the snaps that were taken over the weekend.

The photos attracted huge amounts of criticism on social media which raised questions over social distancing and customer numbers permitted in the store.

A response sent to Wakefield councillor, Nadeem Ahmed, after he raised concerns said the supermarket continued to monitor customer numbers through camera technology, rather than with security guards.

But they added: "I have raised your concerns with the management team at the store where this will be reviewed and further action will be taken where necessary to ensure that the store is following the relevant guidelines."

Heather Lavery, who posted the photos said she spoke with customer services and the manager over the weekend, but said nothing was done about the situation.

She said: "Common sense seems to have gone out the window and I am very concerned for all the people who were in Asda today this was not a case of a few more people in the store than should have been, it was heaving like Christmas Eve with no crowd control."
