The Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust, which manages all three hospitals, said they had taken the decision to restrict visitors in order "to protect everyone, as much as we can, from the spread of coronavirus".

There will be a maximum of two visitors per bed, and children will only be allowed to visit in exceptional circumstances, which must be agreed by senior ward staff.

In paediatrics, two parents or caregivers can visit during the day, but only one will be allowed to stay the night.

Those staying on the maternity ward will be allowed one visitor and/or a birthing partner.

The Trust are also asking people to continue washing their hands, especially after using public transport, and to catch all coughs and sneezes in a disposable tissue.

The full statement reads: "The Trust has taken the decision to restrict visiting across all three hospital sites. This is in order to protect everyone, as much as we can, from the spread of coronavirus.

"We appreciate this will be difficult for people wanting to visit their loved ones in hospital, but hope that everyone understands the reasons why we have felt it necessary to take these precautions.

"From Tuesday 17 March the follow visiting restrictions will be in place:

"Visiting hours will be restricted to: 2pm-4pm; 6pm-8pm

"Only two visitors are permitted per bed

"We request that children do not visit at all, unless in exceptional circumstances (which will be agreed by the ward manager)
