In new figures released today, it was confirmed that a total of 23 people had died at Pinderfields, Pontefract or Dewsbury and District Hospitals after testing positive for Covid-19.

A total of 79 people in the Wakefield district have now tested positive for the virus. The figures cover the period of Saturday, March 14 to Wednesday, April 1.

However, these figures do not include those who have not been tested for the virus - the government has previously stated that there are believed to be thousands of people in the UK who have coronavirus but have not been tested, meaning their cases would not be reflected in the official figures.

The first deaths occurred on Sunday, March 15 and Monday, March 16.

In a statement issued that week, the Trust confirmed that both patients were in their 70s and had significant underlying health conditions.

No further information is known about the other deaths at this time.

Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust, which manages the hospitals, has said that they are "not overwhelmed" by the virus.
