Clare Trueman, 50, from South Elmsall, was in a coma for six days and spent 26 days in intensive care, requiring a tracheotomy.

But on Thursday evening she was finally able to go home to her husband Brian and son Charlie.

It was also reported that the neighbours on her street were also out in force to welcome her home.

Clare said: "I can’t thank the staff at Pinderfields Hospital enough. It has been a hard journey and they have been wonderful. I know for my family, they would want to thank the staff on ICU who have been their rock.

"Everyone has been amazing to me but the physiotherapist’s particularly, Liam and Stacey, they helped me to get back on to my feet which was a big deal.

"It was scary waking up and not being able to walk so to be moving again feels incredible.”

Her son Charlie is a 13-year-old chorister at Wakefield Cathedral and a huge fan of former child singer Aled Jones, who had offered his support during Clare's fight for survival.

Clare said: “It’s overwhelming to hear about the love and support my family have received during my time in hospital. It will have really helped them during this scary time.

"It’s wonderful that Charlie has been able to keep busy with his school work and singing, he’s a huge Aled Jones fan so I know that will have helped him a lot.

"I really can’t wait to get home to see them both and give them a big hug!”
