The hospice said whilst they are in a fortunate position to have sufficient staff and are still able to offer consistent and stable clinical provision to their patients, new patient visiting arrangements are now in place, which will reduce the number of visitors to the hospice.

Various steps have also been taken to enable non-clinical staff to work from home and where that isn’t possible, all previously advised safety measures will be followed, including rigorous hand washing routines, frequent surface cleaning and maintaining a safe distance from each other. Self-isolation for staff will also be fully supported.

Tina Turner, CEO of Wakefield Hospice, said: “We want to reassure our patients, and their relatives, that the measures we have put in place are there to protect and support those who are poorly and vulnerable, and those who put themselves at risk to continue to care for them.

“New regulations mean that our staff have ‘keyworker’ status and we are all very proud to be supporting the community alongside the NHS in the amazing work they are doing.

"Whilst we are keen to raise awareness of the virus and to promote safe practice, we are also conscious of the natural anxieties of the public, and can reassure everyone that we are still continuing to care for our patients and their families in a calm and clean environment.

“Whilst this remains a troubling time for everyone who works for the hospice, keeping morale boosted is more important than ever.

“This situation is not just unusual, it is unique, and the impact on our daily lives and the future of our hospice should not be underestimated.

“That said, we are in the fortunate position of being well-resourced, well-supported, and part of a strong and capable team. We will still be caring for people at the most vulnerable point in their lives, long after the virus has gone.”

This year the hospice is celebrating its 30th anniversary and your Express will be supporting it throughout the year.
