Weekly data shows 62 more coronavirus cases in Wakefield as infection rate climbs

Data published for the week of August 3 - 9 showed the infection rate in the area rose to 17.4 cases per 100,000 people, up from 14.8 the previous week.
The previous week's rate had originally been set at 14.2, but a change in the way cases are recorded prompted this to be amended later.

Hide AdWakefield remains classed as an "area of concern" by the government, but is not subject to restrictions which were re-imposed in Kirklees, Calderdale and Bradford at the end of last month.
On Sunday night, Pontefract pub The Ponty Tavern announced it was closing temporarily after two members of staff tested positive for Covid.
There has also been two separate outbreaks at The Sleep Factory warehouse in Ossett, the latest of which was reported last Monday after four staff contracted the virus, and one large one at Urban House in Wakefield, which accommodates asylum seekers.
Wakefield Council's Cabinet member for health, Faith Heptinstall said: "We have seen another increase in positive case rates and that’s why I urge people not to be complacent and to continue to follow the advice given.

The latest figures bring the total number of coronavirus cases in Wakefield to 1,951 since the start of the pandemic.
