The idea came from group member, Amy Day, after a conversation with a Pinderfields Hospital maternity nurse told her that the hospitals are running low on scrubs.

Amy said: “After chatting with a nurse, I saw an appeal on Facebook called ‘for the love of scrubs’, where I learned that some hospitals in the UK don’t have enough scrubs and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to keep staff safe.

“Suppliers are running low and stock and they can’t order any because suppliers are closing.

“I mentioned to the ladies in my sewing club that we could start making scrubs for the doctors and nurses.

“To fund the materials, someone suggested we set up a GoFundMe page, we thought we’d only make a few sets.

“But the page went crazy and we’ve raised around £1,400 now and so many people in the community have chipped in.

The buzz around the charitable project has urged people in the community to try their hand at sewing to help the club make as many scrubs as possible.

Amy said: “It’s just fantastic that people in our area are using the time to help us make as many as possible and if they can’t sew, they happily donate towards materials.

“I take my daily walk around Thornhill and go past households who have gotten in touch with us wanting to help, they leave fabric on their doorsteps for me to collect.

“It’s been nice for all of us in the sewing club, because we’ve got to know loads of people in the community by doing this.

“It’s been a real team effort from our club and I'm in awe of all the ladies who helped get it off the ground.

“With the virus being a hidden enemy, we’re all trapped inside. It’s been a good opportunity for people to help make anything from wash bags to scrubs.

“As long as the donations keep coming in we’ll continue to make them for as long as we need to.

“We can’t make scrubs for the whole nation but we’ll make as many as we can for our locale.”
