The office, based at the Town Hall on Wood Street in the city centre, has stopped conducting face-to-face business because of COVID-19.

The local council says that grieving families now no longer need to collect a cause of death certificate following the passing of a loved one.

Instead, doctors will send a scanned copy of the certificate directly to the registry office, who will then contact family members to make a telephone appointment.

Andrew Balchin, Wakefield Council’s acting chief executive, said: "We understand that losing a loved one is a difficult time and is being made all the more difficult by the current situation we are in.

"We have taken this decision in light of the current government guidance. We are confident that this new way of working will still enable us to provide this important service, with our usual compassion, whilst ensuring people can safely follow the essential social distancing measures.

"I’d like to reassure residents that we are still offering our usual service, it will just be done in a different way to save lives and protect the NHS.”
