Even though the usual switch on events won’t take place this year, the Christmas lights will still shine bright across the district as part of #LightUp - a new celebration of light-inspired activities and initiatives.

The lights can be enjoyed by people out and about in the city centre and photos are also being shared online, allowing everyone across the district to enjoy it and take part.

As part of this celebration, local residents are also being encouraged to #LightUp their own homes, businesses and communities and share these pictures online throughout November and December.

There will also be a ‘HOLLY-DAYS from home’ activity pack, so people can get the festive feels from the heart of home.

Coun Jacquie Speight, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, said: “The usual switch on events won’t take place this year but the Christmas lights will still be helping us get the festive period underway - even if it all feels quite different to usual."
