But Jean Chirchton, who is cared for by her granddaughter and Complete Care West Yorkshire, on Asdale Road, will not let the covid pandemic spoil her birthday celebrations.

Complete Care West Yorkshire staff are calling on the community to send Jean a birthday card or a special message.

Jodie Bedford, one of Jean’s carers said: “We want Jean to have an amazing 100th birthday.

“It would be so lovely if Jean received some birthday cards. I know it is a big ask but if you can write her a card or send her a message, it would make her feel so special and mean the world to her.

“You can send cards to our office and we will ensure she gets them on the day when we sing happy birthday to her.”

Greenwich born Jean grew up in a children’s home along with her sister.

After her sister was adopted, Jean stayed in the children’s home until she was 16.

She was then put into service, having to make her own way in life until the war started.

It was then she began work at a grocery shop in Manchester - it was the shop's owners who took her in and treated her as their own.

A few years later, Jean met Tom, ‘over the garden wall’ and eventually they got married.

Tom was a Yorkshire man and as the bombing got worse he brought Jean home to Yorkshire where they settled and had a daughter, Pat.

Tom passed away when he was just 47, leaving Jean to bring up Pat singlehandedly and sadly Pat also passed away when she was just 46 years old.

Jean, who loved to dance, went on to meet George, ‘a wonderful man’, where they continued to dance twice a week for a few years.

Every Valentine's Day, until George’s passing in 2015, he always brought Jean a dozen red roses - now Jean leaves a dozen red roses on his grave on Valentine’s Day.
