Seamstress raises more than £1,000 for Wakefield Hospice with homemade facemasks

Aileen Talbot began making masks last month and had initially hoped to raise £250 but reached £750 in less than a week.A spike in orders, fuelled by the government's announcement making face masks and coverings mandatory in shops from July 24, she has now exceeded her target.

Aileen said: “I did it just for family and friends then realised there was going to be a demand for them.

“I never thought it would take off as it did, the orders just came flooding in.

“I have one lovely man who is now on his fourth order and it is lovely that people are re-ordering and passing my name on.”

Aileen has now given Wakefield Hospice £1,000 with orders still piling in with the high demand.

“I have bought good quality fabric so they can be washed again and again.

“While ever there is a demand I will continue to raise funds for the hospice.”

Aileen also posted a mask to Downing Street for PM Boris Johnson, thanking him for helping her raise funds for the hospice by making the announcement.

“Wakefield Hospice is absolutely brilliant, you can't match them anywhere.” Aileen said.

Aileen charges £3 for each of her face masks, of which £2 covers her costs and £1 goes straight to the hospice.
