Last month Castleford Academy’s PE Department and Castleford Tigers Foundation joined forces to get students and their families active during home learning after the Christmas break as a way of improving their mental health and well being.

The challenge asks people to cover the distance that The Tigers will travel to away fixtures during 2021.

And those taking part are asked to either run, jog, walk, or cycle as much of the 2,522km distance they can.

So far 200 people have taken part and in just days they have clocked up almost 3,000km

Mr Ryan Lloyd, Head of PE at Castleford Academy, said: “We are overwhelmed by the uptake of our challenge.

“We originally wanted to inspire our own students and their families to keep physically active while at home in these challenging times.

“The number of people taking part is astounding. We are going to prolong the challenge, as it is proving to be such a positive initiative.

“The objective of this is to get active, keep fit and enjoy yourself and we would like to thank the Castleford Tigers Foundation with all their support in putting this together.”

The next part of the challenge will see those involved cover 16,000 km - the distance from the UK to Australia.

Mathew Lancaster, Head of Operations at Castleford Tigers Foundation, said: “Keeping members of our community active and inspired is a fundamental part of what the Castleford Tigers Foundation does.

“To accumulate the distances that have been covered in such a short space of time is a fantastic achievement.”

And Castleford Tiger, Danny Richardson said he is getting ready to take part in the challenge.

He said: “I’d just like to give a shoutout to Castleford Academy for the #CasCommunityChallenge.

“Obviously It's difficult at the minute and everyone getting out and staying active is what we like to see.

“I’m hoping to get out and log some kilometres myself, so keep going!”

The challenge will continue throughout the remainder of lockdown and is open to everyone and prizes will be given to those taking part.
