From Wakefield to America and Dubai - communities exercise together to raise thousands of pounds for Mid Yorkshire Hospital Trust

Thousands of people have been taking part in a five kilometre exercise to raise funds for Mid Yorkshire Hospital Trust during the coronavirus pandemic.

Trevor Brennan was inspired to create the fundraiser by loving wife Sarah who works on the maternity unit at Pinderfields Hospital.

Trevor said: "I see how hard she works and I wanted to do something to help them all."

Trevor created a Facebook page and invited friends to join in '5K for £5' which encourages people to complete a five kilometre exercise and to donate £5 when completed.

The fundraiser has now almost reached £17,000 with thousands of people taking part.

"I would have been happy with £500 but before I knew it it had crept out of my friend group and started going global.

"My friends in Cornwall, Dubai and America have started taking part and it is amazing.

"When it reached £10,000 it was surreal I couldn't believe it and it is still going." Trevor said.

The Facebook group encourages participants to post before and after selfies when taking part in the challenge to encourage others to join in.

Participants have completed 5K by going up and down stairs, walking around their garden and during dog walks as well as cycling.

"It is helping people exercise more, it has created a community between us all and people are in touch with each other and encouraging one another," Trevor said,
