The Black Horse is a vibrant city centre pub, right in the heart of Wakefield’s Civic quarter, in the centre of the famous Westgate Run and close to the station.

Built in 1816 the pub has a long history – but there’s one part of it which could make your spine tingle. The spirits in this bar are not just on the optics – but a ghost has been heard down in the cellar making cries for help.

Landlord Tony Padgett says the spectre is believed to be that of an innocent woman who was mauled to death by a runaway bear in the beer garden at the back of the pub.

Back in the Victorian era there was a zoo at what is now the Orangery, near Westgate station. Legend has it a biscuit salesman was teasing the bear, which became so frustrated it escaped from its pit and went on the rampage killing the woman.

But it’s not just paranormal investigators that are drawn to the pub – the live music, bottomless brunches, huge beer garden, sports screens and famous ‘Sunday Sesh’ all help make this pub the go-to place for a great time.
