Dale Tate said he and wife Kathy had chosen to sell their house and car after deciding it was time to relocate.

But rather than waste time on a traditional sale, they decided to auction off their Ossett home and car through an online auction site.

"We did it on a bit of whim," he said. "But it's gone viral quite quickly. It would be amazing if we could get a lot of Wakefield residents involved to stick their names in the hat.

"It would be lovely for a local person to win it.

"My wife's Australian, I met her over there and we moved back here. We've got four young boys.

"We don't really want to rent the house out from the other side of the world."

More than 67,000 tickets have sold since the house was listed last week, and Dale said the site had been so inundated with visitors that it had crashed on multiple occasions.

He warned people not to hesitate if they were considering buying tickets, as the competition could continue until September, but will automatically close when the final ticket is sold.

He said: "It's brilliant that people have been so keen. It would just be amazing to hand over the keys to someone.

"We don't make a penny unless we sell all the tickets. The big thing that people are missing is that there aren't necessarily 83 days.

"As soon as the last ticket is sold it will automatically at that second pick the winner.

"I think some people are planning to hold on and wait until the end."

The winner of the competition will receive the keys to the Tates' four bed home in Ossett, as well as their 2017 Volvo XC90 Hybrid with a year of insurance.
