And residents wasted no time in stuffing their own straw-filled stars, with at least 160 ready for the launch this weekend.

The idea was first uploaded to Facebook by Wakefield Road resident Karen Campbell, who says she has been blown away by the feedback.

She said: “I never expected the response we have had.

“One or two people started making them and more kept asking how to enter so now we have over 160, it’s gone absolutely crazy.

“I think that because everybody is at home it’s been giving them something to do.”

People are being asked to make sure their scarecrows are in place by Saturday, May 30.

Check the Ackworth Scarecrow Festival Facebook page for further details.

Prizes are to be awarded for the best scarecrows, judged by special guest and Castleford Tigers coach, Daryl Powell.
