100 jobs could be created at new car dealers

Up to 100 jobs could be created in Wakefield with the opening of a new car auctioneering business.

Vehicle trader Ashton Barclay has applied for planning permission to start working at Photon Park in Normanton, near the town’s industrial estate.

The company, which has five branches across the UK, including one in south Leeds, wants to relocate its head office to the site and develop land around the existing building.

The site was originally purpose built for Harvard Engineering, who are based nearby, but has been vacant since 2015.

In their proposals, Ashton Barclay says that the development will create between 90 and 100 jobs and attract investment and growth.

Under the plans, the dealership would be open on weekdays between 8am and 6pm and have space to accommodate 800 vehicles.

Normanton ward councillor David Dagger has given his backing to the proposals, which will go before a planning committee later in the year.

He said: “I am delighted to hear about Aston Barclay’s proposed move to Photon Park. The building, whilst impressive, has stood idle for approximately two years.

“I am encouraged to hear that Aston Barclay is seeking to locate its Head Office at the park and in turn this will bring up to 90 new, quality, well paid jobs to the area.

“Normanton Industrial Estate is recognised by Government as an assisted area and a less economically advantaged place to locate a business.

“The skilled jobs will be a welcomed addition to Normanton and

the Wakefield District.”
