Crews from the town’s station were called to an area of waste land behind Wakefield College’s Skills Xchange campus, off Leeds Road, in Glass Houghton at around 8pm.

A fire service spokesman said the boy had been playing with a girl on the land but got his legs trapped in a 4ft-deep manhole.
