Sounds of Silence, a dance-drama, will be premiered in the Phoenix Theatre at Airedale Academy today (Friday). It will then be made available online.

Students at Crewe Road used their skills, and in some cases first-hand knowledge, to create, produce and perform the piece as part of Castleford Community Alcohol Partnership.

The performance is interspersed with statistics and information on help and support services. It was earlier performed to elected members of Wakefield Council and Wakefield Together Safeguarding Team.

The play was deemed so moving that the students were invited to perform at four safeguarding workshops and agreed to create a film of the performance to be used as an educational and training tool.

Airedale and Ferry Fryston Neighbourhood Management Board successfully bid to secure £5,000 from the West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Burns-Williamson’s Safer Communities Fund.

They then commissioned Fly Girl Films, from Wakefield, who regularly work with community groups and organisations to raise awareness on important issues.

Neighbourhood Management Board chairman Mike Dixon said: “Domestic abuse is a real blight in our society with well proven links to alcohol misuse. The students have come up with a very powerful and emotional play about a very sensitive subject. The community should be extremely proud of the impact these young people have had, and will continue to have with the introduction of this film.”

Mr Burns-Williamson said: “It is a very emotive film and the students have done a brilliant job of explaining what is a very difficult subject.”
