The supermarket company first expressed interest in the site in January 2015 just after the Barnsley Road facility closed and crews moved to the new South Kirkby fire station.

If the plans are approved by Wakefield Council, the old station would be demolished for a 9,752sqm shop, providing 50 jobs.

A design and access statement put forward with the application reads: “The proposal involves redevelopment of the vacant former South Elmsall Fire Station and the Exchange Street Car Park.

“The redevelopment of this site will improve the appearance of an existing, vacant, brownfield site,” it adds.

Twenty-four car parking spaces would be allocated, with half being reserved for disabled people, along with 10 bicycle slots.

The statement continues: “As a food store with predominately own labelled brands, Aldi would not compete directly with existing businesses within South Elmsall.

“For instance it does not have an in store baker, butcher, fishmonger or café and does not sell cigarettes.

“This, therefore, allows local businesses to flourish as customers link trips with the Aldi store and other local shops.”

However, a Home Bargains store exists just next door to the site.
