A group of apprentices has helped spruce up a community centre in Castleford.

The team of nine young people from Wakefield and District Housing (WDH) helped revamp Cutsyke Community House as part of the 2014 Brathay Apprentice Challenge.

It took the group two days to clear out an office and redecorate the centre, which is used for computer access, coffee mornings and job clubs for people across Castleford.

Gordon Hooker, Cutsyke Community Group manager, said: “It’s good that WDH’s apprentices are practising their skills on our community centre, before going on to work on people’s homes. They’ve done a great job.”

Faye Pass, WDH apprenticeship review officer, said: “Part of the challenge has seen the group promote apprenticeships as a whole and has been able to benefit the community at the same time.

“It has also allowed them to work together as a team.”
