More than 100 properties in the towns were affected by flooding during heavy rainfall in August 2014 and August 2015.

And many were also contaminated by foul sewage.

A total of 17 of the most high risk properties, at Denwell Terrace and Atkinson Lane in Pontefract and Carr Lane, in Castleford, will now have flooding defence measures installed.

In a report to a meeting of Wakefield Council, Coun Matthew Morley, cabinet member for transport and highways, said: "Whilst it is not the council's responsibility to solve flooding to properties, investigation's carried out by the Flood Risk Management Team identified a number of properties that were considered as high priority, after being flooded internally on both occasions, with a high risk of flooding in the future.

"The nature of the flooding experienced caused properties to be adversely affected by short periods of heavy rainfall."

The council was successful in bids for £85k of funding from the Environment Agency to put the resilience scheme in place.

Defence measures, including flood doors and flood resistant air brick covers will be installed by the summer.
