Arson attack at Crigglestone Sports and Social Club destroys changing rooms

Arsonist have destroyed a community sports club building used by hundreds of football, cricket and netball players.

Police have launched an investigation after the portable building at Crigglestone Sports and Social Club was torched on Tuesday night.

The building was completely destroyed in the blaze which was started at around 11.20pm.

Kevin Barker, chairman of the club, said: “We have lost a really good community facility over night.

“I’m devastated by it. The cost of the damage is not the issue. You can’t put a price on it really - the impact it will have on the club and the community will be enormous.

“I can’t see any reason why somebody would do this. Everybody in the community knows that the building is well used and there was nothing of value in it.”

He was alerted to the fire at 11.30pm and raced to the club.

Mr Barker said: “It looked just like the huge bonfire they have in Thornes Park. It was so intense.” The building was used as a kitchen and changing room by the club’s many football teams, cricket team and netball players. It was also used by school children taking part in holiday camps and youth groups The club were due to meet with Wakefield Council next week to discuss their plans to replace the temporary building with a new permanent facility at the club, on Painthorpe Lane.

Mr Barker hopes the community will now rally behind the club to bring their redevelopment plans forward.

He said: “The club relies heavily on sponsorship and the good will of the community. If any businesses can help us or offer their support we would really like to hear from them.” To contact Mr Barker call 07772477586. Contact police on 101.
