A CASTLEFORD man who thought he would have to work until the age of 70 is now planning to put his feet up sooner after scooping almost £200,000 on a bet of just £2.
Delivery van driver John McClure, 53, of Townville, was presented with a cheque for £193,505 at Haydock Park racecourse last Saturday, where he was a guest of bookmakers BetFred along with partner Jeanette Gascoigne and a minibus full of friends.
Mr McClure – who almost increased his winnings to £275,000 on Saturday – said: “It is a life-changing figure already, as it would have taken me nine or ten years to earn that much, so now I can cut down on my hours and not have to worry about retiring at 70 years of age.
“I’ve used the winnings so far to pay off the mortgage and the rest will go as retirement savings.
“I can go from working 60 hours a week to half that and still have some fun along the way – it’s a wonderful feeling just paying off the mortgage.”
Mr McClure, whose previous biggest win was £1,700, picked six winning horses the previous Saturday, including the appropriately-named Expenses Claim and two which came in at odds of 12-1 and 25-1 respectively.
He added: “I don’t generally do expenses at work as I am allowed to drive the van home, but it would take a lifetime of serious expenses to get anywhere near that kind of cash – even MPs would struggle to do it in a weekend!
“The weekend was exceptional and the hospitality was absolutely brilliant. It is a day we will remember for the rest of our lives.”
