Pontefract Castle volunteer and heritage group re-enactor Brendan Lee has died.

Brendan, who was born in County Meath, Ireland, moved to Pontefract in 1954.

He became well-known in the town for his appearances as Santa Claus at schools, playing the Black Monk at ghost walks and serving tea to visitors at the castle.

Martin Lodge, vice-chairman of Pontefract Heritage Group, said: ““Nine years ago Bren was persuaded to help serve refreshments at the ghost walk, and while he was at it, would he mind dressing up as a monk? From then, Bren became the Black Monk of Pontefract (and occasionally Henry VIII). Bren will be missed by all whose lives he touched and our thoughts are with his family”
