Building society to close in Wakefield

A building society in the city centre will close as part of a major overhaul by Yorkshire Building Society.

YBS said that it is rebranding Barnsley Building Society and Chelsea Building Society branches under its own name.

And Barnsley Building Society on Kirkgate is one of the branches that has been earmarked for closure between April and September.

In total 22 branches will shut, including nine Yorkshire branches and seven Chelsea Building Society branches.

YBS merged with Barnsley Building Society in 2008 and Chelsea Building Society in 2010.

A group spokeswoman said 13 jobs were at risk but most staff would be redeployed.

Chief executive Chris Pilling said the move would make the group more efficient.

He added: “Our branch network always has been, and remains, at the heart of our business, providing the face-to-face service that many of our members prefer.”
