Burger chain McDonald’s has denied it will be opening a new restaurant in Pontefract.

Speculation has been mounting that the firm was planning to take over the old New Look clothes store on Market Place after a planning application was submitted in May for a change of use to a restaurant.

Since then social media has been rife with suggestions that the American firm were planning on opening a store, but a McDonald’s spokesman said there is “absolutely no truth” that they would take over.

New Look announced it was to shut several shops across the country earlier this year due to difficult trading conditions, but Pontefract’s was not earmarked.

However, the shop shut earlier this month.
