Arriva Yorkshire has expanded its 411 service, which will now travel from the Chequerfield estate into the city.

And to celebrate the launch of the route, pupils were tasked to design a new exterior for one of the buses.

The winner’s design will then be transferred onto the vehicle. The new service starts running from Monday.

Arriva Yorkshire’s regional managing director Nigel Featham said: “It is great to give something back to the local community. The competition has already created a lot of excitement at the school.

“We thought it would be a great idea for the local children to design one of our buses on this new route, seeing as the idea to provide a direct route to Leeds came from the people of the Chequerfield estate in the first place.”

The competition is being run by Arriva Yorkshire and De Lacy Academy.

The five finalists were chosen by the bus firm this week and people can now vote for their favourite design via Arriva Yorkshire’s Facebook page.

The winner will be announced after the voting closes on Monday, February 29.

Mr Featham said the company decided to run the new bus service following a consultation with passengers.

He added: “We invest a lot of time talking to customers. One thing that came out was the need for links to Leeds from the Chequerfield estate.

For £4.70 you can travel anywhere in West Yorkshire from there, as many times as you like in a day, so I think we have achieved that.”
