Cable thieves leave hundreds in dark

Hundreds of homes were left without electricity after thieves stole overhead power cables in two separate incidents.

Northern Powergrid said thieves stole 900m of overhead power cables in East Hardwick at around 3am on Wednesday, February 11.

The theft left more than 670 homes in Darrington without power.

Later the same day thieves stole 600m of overhead cables in Kippax causing 205 properties in Ledston and Kippax to be without electricity for eight hours.

It was the fourth time in the last year that customers in the villages had been left without power because of cable thefts .

Nigel Walker, Northern Powergrid’s vulnerable assets manager, said: “These attacks on our network are totally unacceptable.

“We want to reassure people that we are doing everything we can to pull the plug on the thieves who do not care about the danger and damage they cause in local communities.
