Royal Mail said it was “exploring an option” to move its Ossett Delivery Office to Grange Valley Road in Batley by spring next year.

But Ossett councillor Angela Taylor set up a petition objecting to the plans last week, which has already been signed by almost 600 residents.

Coun Taylor said the move would affect elderly and disabled people in the town because there is no access to the Batley office via public transport. She said: “There has been absolutely no consultation with Ossett residents and businesses - the people that this move would affect the most. The most vulnerable groups in Ossett - the elderly and disabled - will be severely disadvantaged.”

Royal Mail spokeswoman Ronit Wolfson said the move was being explored as part of the firm’s “ongoing transformation” of its business.

She said: “We have just started to talk to our union and our people about this potential move and seek their feedback. No final decision has been made yet.

“We are committed to continuing to provide a first class service to our business and residential customers served by these offices. We would always offer our customers alternative means of receiving undelivered items of mail, including delivery to neighbour.”
