Castleford Tigers boss Daryl Powell has revealed that a number of players have had to sit out pre-season training so far after injury hangovers from last season.
With a big list of players having to undergo operations several are still in rehab, while others are taking part in partial training. But there has been some good news with skipper Michael Shenton and key forward Grant Millington given the all-clear after missing the end of last season. Half-back Ben Roberts is also able to run again.
Head coach Powell told the Express: “Obviously with what happened to us last year there was always going to be a decent fall-out because of the high number of injuries that we had. But we’ve got an outstanding physio team and they are working pretty hard to get the boys where they need to be.
“Andy Lynch, Larne Patrick, Junior Moors and Adam Milner are not in full training yet. Ben Roberts has just come back in this week, but is not in full training, and Nathan Massey is doing some training, but not everything.
“So there’s quite a lot of experienced players who aren’t at training alongside Luke Gale not being back in yet because of his England commitments.
“Those guys pretty much have all had operations to correct problems they had as they went through the season.
“Junior Moors is recovering from a knee injury and is on a rehab programme. Andy Lynch has had three operations and he’s recovering from those. Nathan Massey has had a wrist operation and he’s getting back into it.
“Larne Patrick had a hand operation so he’s running, but not doing anything with the ball. Adam Milner’s also recovering after having a knee operation.
“Benny Roberts had an operation on his foot and he’s running, but he’s easing his way back into that and he’s only just come back into the country.
“All of those who have had operations will take different recovery times, but there’s quite a few that are sort of medium term, three or four months recovery time, which obviously runs into the pre-season training.”
Powell is pleased to have some of his long term absentees back.
He said: “Shenny is in full training and it’s good to see him back. Grant Millington is also fine. They’ve had a look at his heart problem and it just needs constant assessment, but he has been fine so far.
“It’s not a major issue. He may at some point have to have something done in there, but it’s not a dangerous operation so he should be okay.
“Joel Monaghan and Tom Holmes are not doing full training, but they are doing some work. They’ve both had shoulder operations and are in training, but not in full contact.”
