The Carlton Street real ale house was awarded the title some months ago, but last week licensees Neil Midgley and Maureen Shaw finally got their hands on their unique prize, which was designed by Steve “Schenker” Johnson.

A delighted Mrs Shaw said: “It was a marvellous evening and about 70 people attended. The trophy is a wooden plaque with a beer handpull in gold and black.”

The Junction has been blazing a trail for the reintroduction of beer served from wooden casks, which gives the ale an added dimension of flavour. As part of the presentation Mrs Shaw was also given a pair of cask earrings, which she wore with pride at the award ceremony last Thursday.

The event also included a band of regulars, including former Great Britain and Castleford Rugby League player Lee Crooks, singing wood, glorious wood to the tune of mud, glorious mud.

The pub is now gearing up for its annual ‘woodfest’ on Good Friday and Easter Saturday. Expect 20 different beers served from whisky and bourbon type casks.
