A brownies group in Castleford has been saved after the town’s sea cadets opened its premises for them to use.

Holy Cross Brownies, in Airedale, which has been running for more than 20 years, was threatened with closure after its leaders were unable to find an affordable base.

But Castleford Sea Cadets has stepped in to help and opened the doors to its Active Centre, on Stansfield Road to the brownies group.

Sara Fish, brownie group leader, said: “It has just been too expensive for us to find a home. Some of the prices we were getting quoted were just far too much.

“We had been meeting at Airedale Junior School and we’re very grateful to them for that but it wasn’t really suitable for what we want.

“We are so grateful to the sea cadets for allowing us to use their premises.

“It will mean we can finally do normal brownie activities like sleepovers because we’re in a safe and secure building.”

The brownies will now meet at the Active Centre, every Wednesday from 5.45pm until 7.15pm.

There are around 20 members of the group, which is for children aged seven to 10-years-old.

Mrs Fish said: “It was a serious risk that we might have folded and more than anything that was because of the times we were having to meet.

“Because we using the school we had to run the sessions from 4.30pm until 6pm so we just couldn’t get the adult volunteers down because people were at work.

“It also made it difficult for parents to get their children home from school and get them to the brownies in time.”

Castleford Sea Cadets moved to its current base in July 2013 and hope that allowing the brownies to use the facility will see more children taking part.

Lynda Horner, commanding officer, said: “The brownies came to us and asked for help and we agreed without hesitation.

“It’s for the children and it means that they’re out and about in the community.

“We start our junior section at the age of 10 and the children go into the senior section when they are 12 so having the brownies in the same area will help them see what we do and possibly join us.”
