Castleford Tigers have been left counting the cost of their defeat at Wigan with several more injuries to add to their already long list.
In-form centre Jake Webster, flying winger Denny Solomona and key back row forward Oliver Holmes all left the DW Stadium in pain and are being assessed as to when they can next take the field.
Head coach Daryl Powell admitted to being frustrated by the latest batch of knocks just when he was getting a few players back and has been left wondering when the Tigers’ luck with injuries will change.
He is already without Michael Shenton, Luke Dorn, Ben Crooks, Ash Robson and Frankie Mariano for the visit of Hull KR to the Mend-A-Hose Jungle this Sunday while Ben Roberts is a major doubt and the Cas boss does not expect Oliver Holmes to play.
He has not ruled out Webster or Solomona yet and there is better news with back rower Junior Moors back in full training and prop Gadwin Springer having a chance of a return, but with none of these certain to be available it is making plans hard to make for Powell.
He told the Express: “It’s pretty tough. We’re sort of just cracking on with it, but it’s been frustrating not being able to put our best team out on the field. We’ve not been able to do that since the St Helens game so we’re having to battle through.
“A few teams are in the same position so you know that’s a fact of life. It’s probably worse than ever in Super League this year and it’s been pretty difficult.
“Jake had to come off last week at Wigan, which made it hard for us and Denny got a knock early on. Hopefully they’re not too bad and we’re still assessing the injuries as we go through the week. But the way it’s going for us at the moment you never know.
“Jake’s wasn’t a knock. He went into the game not 100 per cent, he was struggling with his hip a little bit through the week. That just got on top of him and he had to come off.
“Denny got a whack early on in the game and hurt his shoulder. Again we are assessing him as we go through the week. Hopefully he’ll be available, but we’re not going to know until later in the week.”
Powell said he was waiting to get news on the other injured players.
He said: “Hopefully Gadwin Springer will be okay, but we don’t know until he’s been checked out. Junior Moors is the same. He’s had his pot off and we’ll see how he feels as he does some contact work.
“We’re still waiting on a full assessment on Benny Roberts. He’s had another scan so we’ll find out when that comes back.
“Obviously we’ve got some long term injuries. Frankie Mariano is not going to be right for a while, neither is Luke Dorn.
“Oli Holmes will be out as well. He’s had a reoccurrence of his knee injury and he’s got an injury that’s caused him a lot of pain for a while now.”
