Celebrate the contribution of black and ethnic culture

The performance, which starts at 7.30pm, will mark the beginning of a month of activities to raise awareness of African and Caribbean culture and heritage.

Throughout October people can view a display at Wakefield Museum which will include traditional dress from different African countries include clothing from Nigeria, the Gambia, Sierra Leone and Burundi as well as artefacts from the museum’s collection.

The items have been brought together by Oshione Ekpeh of Wakefield based Afemai Children’s Trust.

Coun Les Shaw, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for culture, leisure and sport said: “We are proud to support Black History Month to honour black men and women.

“These events provide a great opportunity for us, along with the entire nation, to pay tribute to the tremendous contributions of black and ethnic minority people in our society.”

A free workshop which will include drumming and storytelling will be held at Wakefield One on Wednesday, October 8 from 4pm to 5pm.
