An exhibition celebrating children’s favourite things about Wakefield has opened at The Hepworth.
Young people from schools and colleges across the district were invited to submit photographs as part of a ‘My Secret Wakefield’ photography competition.
The competition marked the launch of a new exhibition ‘The Rhubarb Triangle and Other Stories’ by photographer Martin Parr at the gallery.
More than 70 youngsters entered images including the remains of derelict buildings, the natural landscape, street scenes, pets, school friends and family members.
And now their work is also being displayed at the gallery in its fifth anniversary year.
Naomi Roberts, media manager at the gallery said: “We have had a brilliant response to the competition. This exhibition features photographs taken by over 70 young people, aged 3-18, from 18 schools and colleges in Wakefield, who have responded to the theme My Secret Wakefield, set by photographer Martin Parr.”
Teachers and schoolchildren as well as local councillors attended the exhibition launch earlier this month.
The photos are on display until May 2 and visitors are invited to vote for their favourite in each of the competition categories. Voting cards are available in the gallery and can be submitted in the ballot boxes provided.
The winners will be announced on May 6 and there will then be a re-hang of the exhibition with category winners and runners up framed.
An overall winner will be selected by Martin Parr, with public votes counted to award category winners and runners-up prizes. A prize-giving event will be held on May 19.
