Bywater Fisheries is basking in the limelight after being named among the UK’s best new chippies.

The fish and chip shop in Leeds Road, Allerton Bywater - which won our chip shop of the year contest in October 2014 - has now got even bigger fish to fry.

The business, which opened in April last year, has been named in the UK’s top ten of fledgling fish and chip shops as part of the 2016 National Fish & Chip Awards, organised by Seafish.

Owner Alison Ludwell, 36, asked for the secret of great fish and chips, said: “If I knew that I would bottle it. We just believe in buying seasonal, good quality products and letting them speak for themselves.”

“I was absolutely delighted to learn about the accolade. I literally opened the notification email as I was walking up to school to get my son. It’s not sunk in just yet.

“I’m sure the customers are going to be thrilled, we’ve got a loyal customer base. We try very hard to be part of the community, so I’m sure they are going to be as thrilled as we are.

“I know it sounds a bit of a cliché, but it really is a team effort. If we go further in this competition it is a credit to everybody who works there.”

Over the coming weeks, the ten shortlisted business will be subjected to mystery judging, including an assessment of product quality and customer service levels. Afterwards, the top ten will be whittled down to three finalists who will compete for the top accolade at the 2016 awards ceremony in January.

Award sponsor Andrew Marriott, of Frymax, said: “The most enjoyable aspect of sponsoring the best newcomer award is being able to see new shops such as Bywater Fisheries, who are driven with a passion to produce great tasting fish and chips for their customers.”

Paul Williams, Chief Executive of Seafish, said: “I cannot stress enough the importance of celebrating and rewarding new entrants into the industry; there are some incredibly talented individuals that are dedicating their careers to ensure the future of our industry continues to thrive and that must be applauded. I’d like to offer up my congratulations to the shortlisted shops and wish them the best as they prepare to continue their quest towards becoming a finalist.”
