Insp Ian Williams, of Wakefield Police, said: “It is a disappointing and cowardly crime at any time but especially in the run up to Christmas when churches and charities do an enormous amount of good work for those who have nothing.

“I would appeal to anyone who may have seen or heard anything to come forward.

“If you saw anyone acting suspiciously around the church or have any information relating to this incident get in touch with us so that we can deal with those responsible.”

Anyone with information should contact the north west NPT on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 quoting crime reference 13140459960.
