The new market, which opens on November 17, has attracted a large number of traders who will be selling a variety of goods including clothes, fruit and vegetables, street food and seasonal Christmas gifts, on stalls stretching from the Bull Ring to Teale Street.

So far, 40 traders have signed up to join the Council’s new permanent outdoor market which will run every week from Thursday to Saturday.

The numbers will be further boosted with the addition of more than 20 Christmas traders joining them over the festive season.

Coun Denise Jeffery, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and Skills, said: “We are very proud to be launching our new outdoor market, which gets this year’s festive season off to a great start.

“There has been a fantastic response from traders which has exceeded all our expectations. We’ve had an unprecedented number of applications for our first market, with many of the applications coming from existing traders within Wakefield. I’m also very pleased that we are getting applications from out of the area, which shows there’s a lot of interest in this new venture.

“The new outdoor market will offer even more choice and value and I’m sure it will be a great addition to our city centre. So I’d encourage shoppers to come and support the traders and join them to mark the start of the Christmas season.”
