Community has say on plans for new M&S store

Members of the community have had their say on proposals for a new Marks and Spencer Simply Food store in Sandal.

Sandal Property Group announced plans to build the shop, off Asdale Road, close to the Asda and Aldi supermarkets, last year.

And it is now preparing to submit a planning application for the site, after consulting with people living in the area.

More than 230 residents attended a public exhibition to see the plans for the store, and other retail units at the site, and give feedback on the scheme.

Sandal Property Group said 56 per cent of feedback forms were in favour of the proposals, which could create up to 50 full time jobs.

A spokesman said: “We are delighted with the response from the public and are pleased the majority are in favour of the plans.

“The consultation will continue and we are keen to get as much feedback as possible.

“All comments on the plans are welcome and we have tried to speak to as many residents, groups, local businesses and other interested parties as possible.

“Our plans represent a significant investment into Sandal and will deliver a M&S Simply Food store that will allow local residents to shop locally and will improve choice in the district centre.”

Nearly 30 per cent of those who have responded to the consultation said they had concerns about the development.

Some were in relation to access to the site and increased traffic.

The plans include highways improvement work to add new lanes to Asdale Road.
