Consultation has started on cycling '˜superhighway'

A public consultation is underway over plans to create a new cycle route which would link Wakefield to Castleford along the River Calder.

The bike path would provide a safe way for cyclers to get to and from work and enjoy leisurely rides.

It would also connect the Castleford Greenway, built in 2014, and the national coast to coast Trans-Pennine Trail at Methley Junction.

An online consultation process started on Monday and lasts until Friday, July 29.

Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport and Highways Coun Matthew Morley said: “I would encourage people to take part in this consultation and have their say on the new route which could provide a new safe and pleasant journey for cyclists and walkers.”

The scheme would form part of the City Connect Programme after the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and the West Yorkshire District Council successfully secured £22m from the Department of Transport.

Coun Keith Wakefield, of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s Transport Committee said: “We are committed to developing an integrated Metro-style transport network and cycling will be a key element of that network.”
