Council warn of deadly dangers of swimming in reservoirs

Wakefield Council has issued the warning after West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was called out to 107 water rescue incidents across the county in the last five years- nine of which resulted in deaths.

Coun Maureen Cummings, cabinet member for environment and communities, said: “We want everyone to enjoy the summer so we are reminding residents of the possible dangers of hazardous places.

“During the hot weather some people may be tempted into the water for what appears to be a cooling dip, but swimmers have no idea of what is under the surface. Tangles of weeds and rubbish could ensnare a swimmer and put them in danger of drowning or severe injury. The water can also become dangerously cold when it gets deeper.
