Couple rescued from Castleford river after boat fire

Two people were rescued from the River Calder in Castleford after their boat caught fire yesterday (Sunday).

Fire crews from Castleford, Rothwell and Wakefield were called to the scene near Methley Bridge Boatyard at around 1.45pm.

Granville Shaw, watch manager at Castleford fire station, said: “The couple were on a pleasure barge when a fire broke out in the engine room.

“They had to jump into the river and were picked up by a passing barge. The couple, from the Doncaster area, were taken to Pinderfields Hospital with slight burns and smoke inhalation.”
